    About Carol

Carol Stalcup’s art is informed by her experiences as a psychologist and spiritual director. Recognizing the power of self-expression and creativity as both wellness and spiritual practices, she paints intuitively, with a focus on process, color and mark-making. Her abstract paintings reflect a visual vocabulary based on mindful attention to nature as well as to the complex mysteries of being human. A long-time resident of Fort Worth, her work has appeared in a number of juried and non-juried exhibitions.

Artist Statement: Using color, texture, gestural mark-making and intentional pentimento, I create loose representational and/or abstract images. A visual vocabulary blending reality, memories, imagination and dreams floats onto the canvas in unexpected and intriguing ways. I love the materiality of the process, the feel of palette knife on canvas or wood, discovering how colors impact each other. In similar ways we are constantly changing our view of ourselves and others. Painting intuitively shakes up the way I see things, fuels my curiosity and sense of wonder. Beginning with an attitude of playfulness and an intention to learn, the dialogue with the image emerges--a conversation, a collaboration, with many “what if?” moments. My hope is to create images that open viewers to their own story, but also reflect a universal inner landscape, recognizing that we humans are complex, messy, loving, colorful, curious creatures, always in process, never finished.
